Calgary police are investigating two suspicious vehicle fires earlier this week that appear to have deliberately targeted Tesla vehicles.
The first incident occurred on Tuesday, when a woman parked her white 2023 Tesla Model Y at a charging station on 12 Ave. S.E. around 9:30 p.m.
Approximately 90 minutes later, she received an alert that her vehicle was no longer charging. Looking out her apartment window, she saw her Tesla engulfed in flames.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, with the Calgary Fire Department extinguishing the fire. Based on initial evidence, investigators believe the fire was intentionally set using an accelerant.
Police are urging anyone who parked at the charging station between 9 and 11:30 p.m. that evening to review their vehicle’s camera footage for any suspicious activity.
A second suspicious fire was reported the next night at a Tesla storage lot on Fairmount Dr. S.E. at around 9:50 p.m. Fire crews arrived to find a grey 2025 Tesla Cybertruck in flames. Investigators again determined that an accelerant was used.
Authorities are collecting evidence, including CCTV footage, and believe the two fires may be connected.
“We continue to investigate these arsons that have targeted Tesla vehicles,” said Staff Sgt. Kurt Jacobs of the Calgary Police Service Arson & Robbery Unit.
“Tesla owners are encouraged to put their car in sentry mode when parked in a non-secure area. This feature engages the vehicle’s camera system to record and notify owners of suspicious activity.”
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to call police at 403-266-1234 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers:
