Calgary police have laid charges in a widening extortion investigation tied to a series of violent and intimidating incidents targeting members of the city’s South Asian community, including threats linked to daycare businesses.The Calgary Police Service confirmed that between March 4 and 22, investigators tracked multiple connected to extortion activities, including a shooting at a residence, repeated property damage and suspicious activity at several daycare locations outside the city, along with ongoing threats against victims.Police allege the incidents are part of coordinated extortion attempts involving demands for large sums of money and, in some cases, control of businesses. The investigation is being led by the CPS Organized Crime Unit with assistance from the RCMP.Authorities have charged Rana Cheema, 45, with extortion and uttering threats. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 22, 2026.Supt. Jeff Bell said the charges mark an early step in what police describe as a complex and ongoing investigation. He warned that law enforcement is taking a firm stance against organized extortion activity in the city.Police emphasized that while some incidents occurred near daycare facilities, investigators do not believe children were at risk. However, the nature of the locations elevated the urgency of the response..Since January 2025, Calgary has recorded 41 extortion attempts, with 18 involving shootings at homes, businesses or vehicles. Officials say similar crimes have been reported across Canada, though no injuries have been reported locally.Investigators say victims have been targeted through international phone calls and social media, contributing to fear and reluctance among some to come forward.Police are urging anyone with information to contact authorities or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.Officials say the case highlights the growing challenge posed by organized extortion networks operating across jurisdictions, and the need for continued coordination between police agencies.
