Calgary police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect believed to be involved in damaging the Peace Bridge. .“We know the Peace Bridge is an iconic art structure in our city, and we know Calgarians are upset by the vandalism and damage caused to something that is meant to be enjoyed by everyone,” said Calgary police acting Staff Sgt. Liana Deegan in a Monday press release. .The release said police were called to the Peace Bridge on Sunday after reports of a man allegedly shattering glass window panes along the bridge. .Calgary police said the suspect is believed to have entered the bridge on the south side near Eau Claire Park, where he began causing damage to the glass before heading north through the bridge. .It is believed the suspect destroyed about 70 window panes. .The release said the suspect was last seen heading towards the alley between 1 Ave. N.W. and Second Ave. N.W. and was believed to be walking near the area of 8 St. N.W. and 9 St. N.W. It added Calgary police are hoping to obtain CCTV footage in the area to assist with its investigation. .The same suspect appears to have vandalized the Peace Bridge in June. The suspect is believed to have shattered a single window pane on the bridge..Calgary police described the suspect as about 50 to 60 years old, with a full mustache, 5-ft. 6-ins. to 5-ft. 9 ins., a slim build, and weighing about 150 lbs..He was last seen wearing a dark-coloured baseball cap with a white logo, a blue sweater with white or reflective stripes on the shoulders, and jeans..Anyone with information about either of the incidents is asked to contact police by calling (403) 266-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222-8477. .“We are currently investigating this incident and are asking anyone with information, or who can identify the suspect, to come forward,” said Deegan. .The Peace Bridge cost $25 million to build. .Calgary spent about $300,000 replacing glass panels broken by vandals and thermal expansion on the bridge since it was opened in 2012. The city had to commission a specialized piece of equipment to slide new glass panels into the bridge because of its unique shape. .Calgary spent $700,000 to replace 300 light fixtures on the bridge that could not hold up to the city’s cold weather.
