
A 55-year-old Canadian women had both her hands bitten off by a shark she was trying to photograph off the Turks and Caicos.
Local media reported the woman waded in and "attempted to engage" with the animal and take a picture of it.
Her husband then jumped in and fought the shark off.
The woman was able to make it back to the beach where a crowd tried to stem the bleeding from her wounds. She was also bitten in the leg but didn't lose it.
Authorities said the shark was six feet long and speculation was that it was a bull shark.
Photos taken by beachgoers showed it thrashing about in the water.
"I was there for 40 minutes and it was still lingering," the Daily Mail reported one witness told a local news site following the bloody attack.
The attack which occurred in the waters off Thompson's Cove Beach in central Providenciales at around 10.30 am last Friday.
The Daily Mail reported the woman had one of her hands amputated at the wrist and the other mid-way down her forearm, and is now said to be receiving medical care back in Canada.
