It has been revealed that King Charles III will deliver the Speech from the Throne on May 27, thus opening the new session of parliament.
Mark Carney made the announcement during his first press conference as an elected prime minister.
"We will have the privilege of welcoming His Majesty King Charles III, who will deliver Canada's Speech from the Throne on May 27," Carney said, noting that Her Majesty the queen will also be in attendance.
He called the king's acceptance of his request "an historic honour."
Carney went on to add that the decision to invite the king was made in order to "clearly underscore the sovereignty of our country."
Charles has not visited Canada since becoming king. His last appearance was in 2022 when he came to mark Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee. Since ascending to the head of the monarchy, Charles has dealt with numerous health issues, restricting his ability to travel.
Queen Camilla will also be making the trip at her husband's side.
