Prime Minister-designate Mark Carney has slammed President Donald Trump for increasing tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
Trump on Tuesday morning announced he will increase the tariffs on all steel and aluminum coming into the US from Canada from the existing 25% to 50% after Ontario Doug Ford imposed a 25% subsidy on electricity going to the United States the day before.
“President Trump’s latest tariffs are an attack on Canadian workers, families, and businesses,” wrote Carney on X on Tuesday.
“My government will ensure our response has maximum impact in the US and minimal impact here in Canada, while supporting the workers impacted,” promised the Liberal leader.
Carney was selected as Liberal party leader on Sunday, securing 85.9% of votes from 150,000 members of the Liberal party 14+.
Carney pledged to continue strong-arming the US president, and made no mention of reaching an agreement on core issues, such as Canada’s weak border, rampant fentanyl trafficking program and pre-existing tariffs Canada imposed on the US on products like dairy and lumber.
“My government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect and make credible, reliable commitments to free and fair trade,” promised Carney.
Tory leader Pierre Poilievre in response to Trump’s announcement condemned the US administration and urged the Liberals to crank up tariffs on US steel and aluminum to 50%.
“Our message to the US administration must be clear: do not mistake our kindness for weakness,” Poilievre said in a statement.
“We are a strong, proud, and sovereign country, and we will fight back against these attacks on our economy and our workers.”
“We will not falter in defence of our country, and these attacks will only harden our resolve.”
