The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) has issued an official statement distancing themselves from heart surgeon pioneer Dr. Dennis Modry..Modry wrote a controversial open letter to Alberta Premier Jason Kenney this week questioning his decision to put the province into another lockdown and impose a province-wide mask-mandate in a bid to stop the spiralling numbers of COVID-19 infections and deaths..In the letter – published exclusively by the Western Standard – the now-retired doctor argued that it is far too late for a lockdown to stop the spread of the virus, and will now only serve to do more harm than good..The letter went viral and has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times..In response, the CPSA issued a statement saying Modry was not currently licenced to practice medicine in Alberta.. Mossleigh pub briefly opens before authorities move in .“On December 11, 2020, a formerly registered physician Dr. Dennis Modry penned a letter published in the Western Standard to Premier Kenney about the COVID-19 response. The article suggested Dr. Modry is a currently practising physician; however, it’s important to note he is not licensed to practise medicine in Alberta. Dr. Modry’s specialization was in surgery, he does not have expertise in public health,” read the CPSA statement..“As a trusted and knowledgeable public health specialist, CPSA fully supports the Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Hinshaw’s COVID-19 recommendations. Please visit Alberta Health’s website for the most up-to-date information and precautions https://www.alberta.ca/coronavirus-info-for-albertans.aspx”.Modry has questioned whether Hinshaw is being kept up-to-date on the latest pandemic research..A spokesman for Health Minister Tyler Shandro said that no one in his department had been in touch with the CPSA or pressured them to issue the statement; however, he declined twice to give any opinion on Dr. Modry’s letter and its call to end the lockdown..Modry said he has received the support of other doctors in the province and internationally, but that they are afraid to go public..Modry made history in 1985 when he completed the first heart transplant operation in provincial history..Mr. Modry’s original letter to Kenney can be read here..Dave Naylor is the News Editor of the Western Standard.dnaylor@westernstandardonline.com.Twitter.com/nobby7694
