The Conservatives have called on the federal government to designate India's Lawrence Bishnoi Gang a terrorist entity in Canada. The move comes amid an uptick in violent incidents reportedly committed by members."The Bishnoi Gang's activities lay the groundwork for listing it as a terrorist entity," MP and Public Safety Critic Frank Caputo wrote in a letter to Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree. "As you know, they have taken credit for vast violence in Canada and abroad.".Suspected Indian agent surveilled Jagmeet Singh. He pointed out that the gang’s activities include "political shootings, extortion of South Asian Canadians and extreme violence," noting that members "engage in these activities for political, religious and ideological reasons" and often "boast of such activities to intimidate other potential targets.""I implore you to list the Bishnoi Gang as a terrorist entity to provide law enforcement and all levels of government with the tools necessary to address the Gang’s activities," Caputo continued. "The designation would permit the government to push back against the Gang with financial, criminal and property sanctions.".He reminded Anandasangaree that along with law enforcement, many politicians, including BC Premier David Eby, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, and Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke, have expressed support for such a designation..Alberta calls on Ottawa to label Bishnoi Gang a terrorist group ."I therefore ask you," Caputo concluded, "to recommend to Cabinet that there are reasonable grounds to believe that the Bishnoi Gang has knowingly carried out, attempted to carry out, participated in and/or facilitated terrorist activities as defined by s. 83.05(1) of the Criminal Code."In a joint statement, Smith and Public Safety Minister Mike Ellis described the gang as a transnational criminal network with global reach and violent intent. They argued that classifying the group as a terrorist entity would give law enforcement better tools to dismantle it.
