Eight residents in northeast British Columbia have filed complaints with the Canadian Federal Competition Bureau, accusing the David Suzuki Foundation of misuse of imagery in anti-natural gas campaigns. The residents allege a two-decade old photo — showing natural gas wells in Wyoming — was falsely portrayed a current development in B.C.'s Montney formation, a major gas-producing region. They claim this misleads donors, violating Section 74.01(1) of the Competition Act. That section of the Act states: "A person engages in reviewable conduct who, for the purpose of promoting, directly or indirectly, the supply or use of a product or for the purpose of promoting, directly or indirectly, any business interest, by any means whatever, (a) makes a representation to the public that is false or misleading in a material respect.".The residents filed their complaints under Sections 9 and 10 of the act, which require the Bureau to investigate and impose remedies. The remedies include stopping all use of the image, issuing a corrective statement, and refunding any donations that were raised through misleading representation. .The foundation didn't return a request for comment.
