Don Cherry has rejected Ron MacLean's claim that he made his "you people" remark with the goal of getting fired from Coach's Corner.Grapes made it clear he'd "never even thought of that," and said he was "disappointed" in his former broadcasting partner."He can say what he wants," Cherry told the Toronto Sun's Joe Warmington, referring to comments MacLean made in an interview with the National Post just days earlier, "but it never happened.".Ron MacLean claims Don Cherry made 'you people' remark with goal of getting canned from Coach's Corner."It was a bit clumsy, but it was the right outcome," MacLean said of Cherry's November 9, 2019 comments. "Ultimately, that's what needed to happen. It was liberating. Don needed out and the time was right."He called Remembrance Day Cherry's "last swing," noting that in true Cherry fashion, he was "taking a stance that's unpopular, but that feels good in his world."."I was doing the honourable thing by making it look whole," MacLean added. "The attack on immigrants was improper and I was not happy with it — it goes against my ethics. I was able to take my stand and he was able to take his, but I was also playing the game and that card allowed Don to gracefully get out. He could go out on what was for him a high."In the same interview, MacLean made claims about Cherry's health, suggesting it was on the decline."I'm very disappointed in Ron that he would bring this up, and I'm very disappointed that he'd reach back five years and do this," Cherry said in response. When asked whether MacLean was welcome in his home, Cherry said his wife was opposed to the idea, adding, "I don't have any feelings towards Ron."MacLean's comments also drew the ire of hockey legend Bobby Orr."Suggesting Don Cherry used encouraging people to wear poppies on Remembrance Day as an exit strategy from Coach's Corner, revealing he had pneumonia in 2019, and that he doesn't have many friends, I have only one thing to say to you Ron MacLean," Orr said, per the Toronto Sun, "Shame on you."
