A high-risk arrest was made early Thursday morning after a suspect in a suspected stolen semi-truck led police on a dangerous pursuit across Langley and Surrey, ultimately ending in the Fraser River. The incident began around 7:35 p.m. Wednesday, when Langley RCMP's Special Response Team spotted a semi-truck with mismatched licence plates near 24 Ave. and 206 St. Just after midnight, officers attempted to stop the vehicle with support from Integrated Police Dog Services. Upon activation of police lights, the 40-year-old male driver began ramming police vehicles, striking one..Despite efforts by police to disengage, the suspect escalated the situation by intentionally pursuing and ramming at officers before fleeing at high speed.Langley officers deployed a tire deflation device, successfully flattening the truck’s front right tire, but the vehicle continued to flee. Due to the suspect's erratic and dangerous driving, Langley RCMP Frontline officers initiated a pursuit to prevent further public risk. The chase extended into Surrey, through multiple residential neighborhoods..A second spike belt, deployed by the Surrey Provincial Operational Support Unit, disabled the truck’s rear tires, but the suspect continued to drive dangerously, running red lights and overtaking vehicles at high speeds. The pursuit continued northbound on 176 St. to Hwy. 17, and into Surrey’s Bridgeview area.In a final act of recklessness, the suspect drove the semi-truck into a crowded public dock area, then over an embankment and into the Fraser River. The driver fled the submerged vehicle on foot but was arrested shortly afterward with the assistance of the Lower Mainland District Integrated Emergency Response Team..“This was an incredibly dangerous situation involving a suspect who showed zero regard for public safety or the lives of our officers,” said Sgt. Zynal Sharoom, Media Relations Officer for Langley RCMP.“Thanks to the skill, coordination, and professionalism of multiple policing units, this individual was safely taken into custody without injury to the public or police.”The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues.
