An injured hawk found lying in the middle of a South Burnaby road is now recovering at a wildlife rehabilitation facility after being rescued by an RCMP officer. The bird, believed to be a red-tailed hawk, was spotted just after 1 a.m. on June 4 near Hall Ave. and Kingsway. A concerned passerby alerted Burnaby RCMP to the bird, which appeared to have been hit by a vehicle and was at risk of being struck again.A frontline officer found the hawk with a broken wing and an injured eye. After consulting with a conservation officer and contacting nearby wildlife centers, the officer transported the hawk to an emergency animal clinic in Langley for temporary care. The hawk has since been transferred to the OWL Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society in Delta, where she continues to receive treatment.“As a police officer, you never know what you’re going to encounter, or who is going to need your help on any given shift,” said Const. Tyler Hawkins with Burnaby RCMP’s Strike Force.Staff Sergeant Steve Eagles added that it was “a wing win situation,” praising both the responding officer and the “hawk-eyed” citizen who called in the sighting. The hawk has a long recovery ahead, but Burnaby RCMP said she is now in good hands and thanked all those involved in her rescue and care.
