On Thursday a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck northern Alberta at 8:41 a.m. according to Earthquakes Canada.

The quake’s epicentre was around 63 kilometres northeast of Grande Cache and 93 kilometres southeast of Grande Prairie, at a relatively shallow depth of five kilometres.

Residents in Edson, Whitecourt, and Grande Prairie, reported feeling light shaking, with tremors extending as far as Prince George, B.C., over 200 kilometres from the epicentre.

Earthquakes Canada received no reports of damage or injuries, consistent with its assessment that quakes between 3.5 and 5.4 magnitude are often felt but rarely cause damage.

The United States Geological Survey recorded a lower magnitude of 4.7. Authorities say the event may be linked to oil and gas activity in the region, though further investigation is pending.

Residents are encouraged to share their experiences via an online questionnaire on the Earthquakes Canada website to aid ongoing research.

The event follows a history of seismic activity in Alberta, including a notable 5.6-magnitude quake in November 2022, highlighting the region’s occasional susceptibility to moderate earthquakes through its abundant thrust faults.
