Edmonton police have launched a homicide investigation more than a year after a man died in what was initially believed to be a non-criminal medical incident. On June 20, 2024, 39-year-old Dwight Bennett went into medical distress at the Blue Quill Garden Apartments on 25 Ave. in southwest Edmonton. He was taken to hospital by EMS and died later that day. At the time, no police were called to the scene, and the death was treated as medical in nature. That changed in May 2025 when police received new information prompting the Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section to reopen the case. .A second autopsy was performed on July 30, and Bennett’s death was officially ruled a homicide. Police are withholding the cause of death for investigative reasons.“Although this homicide is now over a year old, we believe someone out there knows something,” said Acting Inspector Rob Bilawey with the EPS Homicide Section. “Even the smallest piece of information could be the key to helping us understand what happened to Dwight.”Police are urging anyone with information to come forward. Tips can be submitted to EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 on a mobile phone. Anonymous tips can also be provided to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250.
