Calgary police have charged a man with first-degree murder following the suspicious death of a woman in the Belmont neighborhood.

Investigators believe the suspect, the ex-spouse of the victim, broke into the residence she shared with her current partner and fatally assaulted her.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, identifying the victim as 38-year-old Anna Brazhko of Calgary.

Authorities confirmed she died as a result of a homicide.

The accused, 47-year-old Mohamad Anass Mahmou Al-Sahli, has been charged with one count of first-degree murder. He appeared in court on Tuesday and was remanded into custody.

Postmedia reported Al-Sahli had been placed under an 18-month peace bond last September in connection with an allegation of domestic assault and his conditions include that he have no contact with her or attend her residence, or place of work.

“This is a tragic example of the devastating impacts that domestic violence has on families in Calgary,” said Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit.

“Help is available, and we implore anyone who may have a loved one experiencing domestic violence to reach out and stop the cycle.”

Officials emphasize that domestic violence is a serious issue requiring a community-wide effort to combat. They encourage residents to support victims by recognizing warning signs, being a supportive friend, and educating children about healthy relationships.
