Steven Spencer Welland

A Calgary man found gagged and murdered in Costa Rica was one of the Internet’s biggest gay porn stars, and people who knew him say that could be the reason he was slain.

Media reports identified the victim in Punteranas, Costa Rica as Steven Spencer Welland, 41.

Welland — whose Internet handle was “Swell 80” — appears to have been heavily involved in gay porn, with social media allegations that he ran videos under the web handle Swell 80.

He identifies himself on the xvideos. com site as a “Gay man, Webcam model, Amateur, 41y.”

Many of the gay sex videos – some with more than two million hits – are titled that the victim didn’t know he was being filmed

“Because he records sex videos of guys without consent. It’s involuntary porn. Hot but involuntary,” said one user of the site.

“Nearly all of his stuff was gay for pay. I guess he didn’t pay someone enough so they took it all,” said another.

Costa Rica news site TN8 reported Welland was killed in a sneak attack.

“Apparently, Spencer was resting in a camper (van enabled as a house) that he had parked on private property in the Las Parcelas sector,” said their site.

“Around 2 a.m., the alleged perpetrator sneaked up to the trailer, entered, gagged the Canadian and inflicted 14 stab wounds on different parts of the body that killed the foreigner.

“Apparently, neighbors in the area saw a suspect leave, so they entered the property to see if everything was okay. At that moment they came across the bloody scene and notified the authorities.”

According to the Punteranas Deputy Prosecutor’s Office, “Lefevre Hernández was detained on public roads, outside the home of the offended man, in El Roble de Puntarenas.”

The Western Standard has calls in to police departments in Costa Rica and Canada but haven’t heard back yet.

A friend of Welland, who lives in Calgary, described him as a friendly man who loved to camp.

In his obituary, Welland’s family said he was a born and raised Calgarian, and attended Lord Beaverbrook High School and Mount Royal College.

“He spent some years in Montreal and when he returned in 2007 he started his own business, SW Renovations Inc., which he operated until he left Canada for Central America in 2016,” said the obituary.
