A five-year-old girl is recovering after overdosing on fentanyl at a residence in Mission last Thursday night.
Emergency responders were called to a home on Nottman Street around 9 p.m., after the child became unconscious while receiving CPR.
She had been in the bath when she reportedly came into contact with a jar containing fentanyl. Soon after, she began exhibiting distress, with changes in her breathing and vomiting. Her condition worsened rapidly before paramedics arrived.
Paramedics administered multiple doses of Naloxone to counteract the drug’s effects, which helped stabilize the girl. She was hospitalized overnight and is expected to make a full recovery.
Mission RCMP are using the incident as a reminder of fentanyl’s extreme dangers, especially for children who may unknowingly come into contact with it.
They urge anyone who keeps fentanyl in their home to store it securely and out of reach. Authorities also stress the importance of seeking medical help immediately if fentanyl exposure is suspected, even through skin contact, as early intervention with Naloxone can be lifesaving.
The incident remains under investigation.
