Amita Kuttner, former Green Party interim leader, says "Canada should be a safe haven for trans and non-binary people needing to flee the U.S." after President Donald Trump declared there are only two genders — reported the Globe and Mail.
Kuttner, who has broad professional and life experience, identifies as non-binary, transgender, and pansexual, using they/them and he/him pronouns. An astrophysicist, they have studied black holes.
Kuttner described Trump's executive order regarding two genders as "quite absurd" and argued that it "states things about biological fact that are in fact anything but."
American LGBTQ communities have expressed significant concern over Trump's gender policies, particularly those enacted or proposed for his second term.
Trump has declared through executive orders the U.S. government will officially recognize only two sexes, male and female, which are described as "not changeable" and "grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality."
Trump has moved to end federal programs and policies that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, including those protecting racial equity and support for transgender individuals.
Trump has promised to "keep men out of women's sports," effectively banning transgender women and girls from participating in sports consistent with their gender identity.
"Wokeness or transgender lunacy will stop on my first day of presidency," said Trump in 2024.
"We're going to defeat the cult of gender ideology and reaffirm that God created two genders called men and women. We're not going to allow men to play in women's sports. We're going to save the dignity of women and save women's sports itself."
