Recent slayings on Vancouver Island and in Calgary suggest that Metro Vancouver’s bloody gang violence may be spreading into other parts of western Canada.

Known Red Scorpion-Kang associate Yasin Khan was executed in Nanaimo on May 20 while sitting in his silver BMW at the Rock City Plaza. Three suspects were arrested for the broad daylight shooting but have since been released pending further investigation, according to the Nanaimo RCMP.

“We believe this event has a nexus to the ongoing gang conflict and violence currently plaguing a number of Lower Mainland communities,” Insp. Donovan Tait said in a news release.

Two days after the Nanaimo shooting, Coquitlam RCMP was called to the area of Hart Street and Henderson Avenue around 5:30 pm PST for reports of gunfire.

Officers found a man slumped out of the door of a white Toyota SUV with gunshot wounds. Mir Aali Hussain was pronounced dead at the scene, and police believe it was a targeted shooting but have not confirmed whether Hussain was tied to organized crime.

An hour after the unidentified man was gunned down in Coquitlam, another hit and run execution took place 955 km away in Calgary, where police were called to the 1800 block of 26 Avenue S.W. at approximately 5:30 pm MST.

When they got there, a man was found suffering gunshot wounds inside a vehicle parked in the alley behind 26 Avenue S.W.

The man, identified as Gurkeert Kalkat – the brother of Jaskreet Kalkat, who was gunned down in Burnaby 10 days prior – was pronounced dead on scene. Both brothers belonged to the Brothers Keepers organization.

“These gangs are prepared to go anywhere. If you are from Vancouver, living in Calgary, and you think you’re fine, you’re not,” a former Calgary police investigator told the Western Standard.

Calgary police will be doing a media availability on the recent murder of Gurkeert Kalkat on Wednesday. In conjunction, at 11a.m. PST, CFSEU is will be doing a news conference.
