Former prime minister Stephen Harper announced he wants Conservative leadership candidate Pierre Poilievre to become the next leader. .“In my opinion, Pierre has by far made the strongest case,” said Harper in a Monday video. .“I thought you would like to know what my opinion actually is.”.Harper said there has been a bunch of speculation on who he does and does not support. He said it might be useful for party members to hear his views straight from him. .He went on to say Poilievre was a strong cabinet minister in his government. Poilievre has been “the most vocal and effective critic of the Trudeau Liberals,” he said. .Harper said Poilievre has been talking about the issues mattering to Canadians. He added this candidate is producing “answers rooted in sound conservative ideas, but ones adapted for today’s realities.” .“That’s why he has the strong support of our caucus and our existing membership and why he is bringing the most new members and a new generation into our party,” he said. .“That’s how we win the next federal election.” .Poilievre said Harper “led Canada through turbulent economic times, balanced the budget, and made life more affordable for Canadian families.”.“I was proud to serve in his cabinet, and it's a big honour to have his support in this leadership race,” he said..Former Conservative leader Andrew Scheer endorsed Poilievre in March. .Scheer said he wanted to become involved in this leadership race because he cares “so deeply about our party and our country.” .“Pierre is a man of authenticity,” he said.
