A "man of no fixed address" with a loaded handgun was arrested at a busy SkyTrain station in Vancouver.Michael James Smith, 42, has since been charged with a slew of offences, including failing to comply with the conditions of his release order, possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon.According to the Metro Vancouver Transit Police, the incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. on Sunday at Main Street–Science World station. Officers had been checking fares when they asked Smith to produce proof of payment.."As a result," the agency wrote in a news release, "multiple outstanding warrants were discovered, as well as a loaded Glock 23 handgun, ammunition, and what were believed to be controlled substances, in his possession."Smith was promptly apprehended and is in custody pending his next court appearance." Court records show he also faces a charge of assault with a weapon stemming from an alleged intimate partner violence incident in Delta earlier this year.MVTP Sgt. Dustin Szakacs said following the arrest that, "as police officers, we understand that routine everyday activities, like fare enforcement, can create an opportunity to remove and hold accountable anyone who poses a threat to the feeling of safety of the travelling public."
