In a significant development for Alberta’s independence movement, the Republican Party of Alberta and The Independence Party (TIP) of Alberta have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), consolidating their efforts to advance the province’s autonomy.
The agreement, announced Monday in a statement, positions the Alberta Republicans as the primary vehicle for the independence movement, signalling a new era of collaboration among independence-minded Albertans.
The MOU reflects a shared commitment to building a stronger, self-governing Alberta, according to a joint statement from Cameron Davies, leader of Alberta Republicans, and Ron Robertson, president of TIP.
“Today marks an important milestone in the Alberta independence movement,” Davies and Robertson said.
“The MOU signed by Alberta Republicans and the Independence Party represents more than just an agreement between two parties. It’s a clear signal to Albertans that we are serious about building a unified, forward-looking movement focused on independence, prosperity, and principled leadership.”
As part of the agreement, the two parties will collaborate to select and support candidates who will run under the Alberta Republicans’ banner in upcoming provincial byelections. The partnership aims to streamline efforts and amplify the movement’s impact.
The MOU comes shortly after the federal election, which gave Liberals another term. It also follows the introduction of Alberta Bill 54, which makes it easier to organize a successful independence referendum.
Davies emphasized the significance of the unity effort, saying, “This momentum is the result of honest conversations, mutual respect, and a shared belief in Alberta’s potential. Our board is grateful to Ron Robertson and TIP for putting their trust in Alberta Republicans. We’re stronger together, and this MOU lays the foundation for a more focused and effective movement.”
The leaders underscored their commitment to further unifying independence parties and rallying Albertans around the cause of freedom and self-governance.
“The work to unify all independence parties has begun,” they said.
A recent Angus Reid poll (April) found 30% of Albertans would support leaving Canada if the Liberals, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, won the federal election. This includes 15% favouring Alberta becoming its own country and 11% open to joining the United States.
