A New York Times (NYT) science writer, Azeen Ghorayshi, wrote a story about people regretting their transgender surgeries and the left attacked him for writing the story, and the NYT for publishing it..Ghorayshi wrote the story to show the number of transgender operations being performed on adolescents..“I wrote about transgender adolescents getting top surgery — how frequently it’s really happening, why, and what the risks may be,” said Ghorayshi's tweet..Ghorayshi said “there are few honest conversations” happening around adolescents having transgender surgeries on both the left and right sides of the political spectrum..“A big reason I wrote this story is bc [because] there are few honest conversations about surgery for trans adolescents happening right now. Conservatives fixate on ‘genital mutilation.’ on the left, activists have claimed surgeries don’t happen. Top surgery does,” said Ghorayshi's tweet..Ghorayshi said in the story that transgender surgeries are “rare for underage people,” but some regret the surgery later in life..The NYT and Ghorayshi were attacked on social media for the story.. Screen Shot 2021-10-28 at 1.40.28 PM .Activist and transgender journalist Parker Molloy attacked Ghorayshi for the story..“So... conservatives lie about genital surgeries, people on the left tell the truth about genital surgeries... and, uh... something something both sides?” tweeted Molloy..Another post said “This is transphobic fear-mongering, even if unintentional, and there’s no reason to focus on top surgery specifically except to stoke cultural flames for attention.”.Ghorayshi and the NYT were accused of putting the lives of transgender people at risk, with some subscribers cancelling their NYT subscriptions..“Finally cancelled my subscription over this both-sides garbage. @nytimes, you are endangering trans lives by feeding into the misinformation,” said one tweet..Another person said Ghorayshi would get “hospitals bombed and doctors assassinated.”.“People like Azeen are going to get hospitals bombed and doctors assassinated with their lies and disinformation,” said the tweet.. Trans PronounsTrans pronouns .The U.S. Justice Department investigates all threats against hospitals about transgender surgeries..“Do you share the goal of exterminating trans people, or do you simply not care who suffers so you can make a buck?” said another tweet..“One can only hope for no violence, but if a doctor is killed or a hospital is bombed you should be required to cover the story after writing this bulls*** and adding fuel to the fire,” said another tweet..Another Twitter post accuses the NYT of publishing a story that “isn’t journalism.”.“This isn’t journalism. It’s a non-story. It exists to create a controversy to mollify cisgender people's biases. To create a permission structure for us on the left to ignore the state repression of parents with trans-kids and trans families,” said the tweet.
