Conservative leadership candidate Leslyn Lewis condemned Liberal MP Anthony Housefather for criticizing US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas for voting to overturn Roe v. Wade. .“When the left can’t manipulate and control black people like Justice Thomas, they adopt racist tropes and suggest that independent-minded blacks want to go back to the days when slavery was legal,” said Lewis in a Monday tweet. .“It’s disappointing to see an MP like @ahousefather stoop to this level,” she said..Housefather said overruling Roe v. Wade shows the US Supreme Court wants to “bring the country back 50 years.”.“Justice Thomas’s concurring opinion seems to want to bring the US back to pre Civil War times,” he said..Housefather replied to Lewis’s tweet by saying it was reasonable for him to criticize Thomas. .“Justice Thomas wants to reverse the entire line of cases relying on substantive due process, leading to the end of Obergefell (gay marriage), Lawrence (barring states from making sex between consenting adults illegal) & Griswold (right to birth control),” he said. .“He deserves the criticism.”.Lewis mocked Housefather for taking three hours to respond to her. .“Your intent was clear: you invoked a racist trope to fear monger,” she said. .“Just own it.”.A decision made in the US Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade ended 50 years of federal abortion rights on Friday. .The decision was released in a 6-3 vote, abolishing the ruling that established constitutional rights in the US to access abortions. .It was expected because of an early leak of a draft prepared by Justice Samuel Alito in May. .Lewis is the one pro-life candidate in the Conservative leadership race. .She has promised to ban sex-selective abortions, criminalize coerced abortions, increase funding to pregnancy care centres, and end aid for overseas abortions. .Lewis has been involved with founding the Conservative Black Congress of Canada.
