Texas public safety officials said armed officers were on scene at Robb Elementary School before any children were shot, but did not act. .Officials told CNN armed officers arrived on scene before the gunman — 18-year-old Salvador Ramos — had shot any of the children..News of how much time elapsed from when Ramos shot at the school security officer and when the tactical team finally entered the school and shot him has raised questions and heavy criticism. AP reported that 40 minutes to an hour passed from the time Ramos entered the school and was taken down, according to Texas Department of Safety Director Steve McCraw. .It's believed two Uvalde police officers who arrived on scene exchanged fire with Ramos before he entered the school, leaving the officers wounded. .The killing rampage that took the lives of 19 children and two teachers finally ended when a US Border Patrol team burst in, found Ramos and shot him, during which time witnesses were said to have been pleading with police officers to charge into the school sooner. .Juan Carranza, a neighbour who watched the massacre unfold from across the street, said he watched women pleading with officers to go in. ."Go in there! Go in there!" he said they repeatedly pleaded with the officers..Carranza said he watched Ramos crash his truck near the school, exit the vehicle with a semi-automatic rifle and shot at two people at a nearby funeral home before entering the school. .“There were more of them. There was just one of him,” Carranza said insisting officers should have moved in sooner. .One father, Javier Cazares, who's fourth-grade daughter Jacklyn Cazares was killed in the shooting, said he raced to the school when he heard about what was happening. .Cazares said when he arrived police were outside the building and were not moving in. The father said he and other bystanders suggested charging into the school "because the cops aren't doing anything like they are supposed to." .“The bottom line is law enforcement was there,” McCraw said..“They did engage immediately. They did contain [Ramos] in the classroom.”.A department spokesperson confirmed Thursday the timeline of events is being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation, including when Ramos first shot his grandmother, when he arrived at the school and when he was finally shot. .“Right now, we do not have an accurate or confident timeline to provide to say the gunman was in the school for this period,” Lt. Christopher Olivarez told CNN..He said the school security officer was armed and outside the school and may have exchanged gunfire with Ramos, "but right now we're trying to corroborate that information.".Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz said his tactical team did not hesitate when they arrived on scene and quickly proceeded inside the school. However, law enforcement officials said the team were unable to breach the classroom door and required a staff member to unlock the door with a key. It has not been determined whether the classroom was also barricaded in some way. .Before Ramos went on his shooting rampage in the school, he shot and wounded his grandmother in they home they shared. She remains in hospital..Elderly neighbour Gilbert Gallegos said he heard the gunshot while working outside then watched Ramos run out the front door, jump in a truck and race off. He said the grandmother followed out the front door covered in blood and told him her grandson had shot her. .An investigation continues into what motivated the shooting spree and authorities confirmed Ramos had no known criminal or mental history. .“There were more of them. There was just one of him,” he said.
