One man is in custody and a police dog is recovering at a vet's following an incident in Richmond, BC early Wednesday morning.The canine is expected to recover from its injuries.According to the Richmond RCMP, officers responded to a 9-1-1 call from a man in distress at around 2:28 a.m. on a farm south east of No. 4 Rd. and Westminster Hwy. With the help of the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service, they managed to locate the caller and "attempted to engage to ensure his safety and the safety of the public."During the ensuing struggle, the man "produced and randomly discharged an airgun" before stabbing the police dog. It sustained "multiple puncture wounds" and was rushed to a nearby veterinary clinic for treatment, where it remains stable. .Working with the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team, officers took the man into custody at 7:35 a.m. It is believed to have been an "isolated incident" with no ongoing risk to the public."Thanks to the quick response of our frontline members, LMD IPDS, and LMD IERT, this event ended with the suspect being taken into custody," Richmond RCMP Chief Superintendent Dave Chauhan said. "On behalf of our community we would like to thank our integrated teams and recognize the PSD and their handler for their bravery and service."IPDS Unit Commander Sgt. Derek King noted that, "the well-being of our dogs and handlers is of the utmost importance to us," adding that he and his team "will be continuing to monitor the condition of the PSD and support the handler.".The incident blocked traffic in the area for hours, though the streets have since been re-opened.
