A man wanted on a British Columbia-wide warrant has been arrested after being discovered by a police dog "hiding under several layers of garbage" in an industrial dumpster with a pair of large gardening shears.

The 31-year-old, whose identity has not been released, is now facing the potential of additional charges.

According to the Vancouver Police Department, the arrest took place behind a business compound on January 5 near Arbutus St. and West 11 Ave. Upon locating the man, officers "deployed a police dog and used a beanbag shotgun" to apprehend him.

Earlier that day, police were called to the area of Maple St. and the Arbutus Greenway following reports of "a suspicious man going through people’s backyards." Officers were also told that the same suspect had been "threatening people in the neighbourhood" while armed with the aforementioned tool.

During the arrest, the man was bitten by the police dog and struck with non-lethal rounds from a beanbag shotgun after he "fought with the dog and attempted to injure it."

He was taken into custody, and is receiving medical treatment for injuries he sustained during the arrest.

The suspect was wanted on assault, assault by choking, uttering threats, and mischief charges, though police have now recommended additional charges "related to mischief, weapons possession, and breaching bail conditions."
