Montreal mayor Valérie Plante has called for an independent investigation into the last-minute cancellation of the city's Pride parade..Spokesperson for the city, Marikym Gaudreault, confirmed the decision Tuesday, just a day after Montreal Pride announced it would conduct its own probe into what happened..Organizers decided not to go ahead with the parade on Sunday, just hours before the event was set to begin. The festival’s executive director, Simon Gamache, cited security concerns due to a lack of volunteers to ensure the parade could go ahead safely..According to Gamache, the organization failed to hire the required security staff. About 100 people were either never hired or never assigned to security for the route..In response to the cancellation, multiple groups that had planned to march gathered together to hold their own unsanctioned parades..The city of Montreal donated a total of $600,000 to the week-long Pride festival, while Quebec's Ministry of Tourism gave $1.1 million to Pride Montreal..Plante said Sunday she'd not been informed of the labour issue before the event was cancelled. The mayor said on Twitter Tuesday she was "very satisfied" after the festival organizers said they would cooperate with the investigation..Plante said the probe will shed light on what happened to the parade and “make recommendations to ensure the success of future editions.”.Additionally, Montreal Pride said it will also release a report on its own findings later this week.
