New Democrat MP Charlie Angus (Timmins–James Bay, Ont.) is urging Canadians to sign a public pledge to reduce the country’s reliance on the United States, calling it a “plan of resistance” against economic and political threats.

“Today is the beginning of a grassroots resistance,” Angus told reporters. “We are asking people from across Canada to sign their names, to join us so we can start to build this movement.”

Blacklock's Reporter says the Pledge For Canada, sponsored by the advocacy group Council of Canadians, calls for a national strategy that strengthens Canadian sovereignty, diversifies trade, and protects democracy from foreign interference.

It has been signed by several labour and cultural leaders, including Unifor president Lana Payne, Canadian Labour Congress secretary-treasurer Lily Chang, and environmentalist David Suzuki. Angus is the only Member of Parliament to sign so far.

“It’s a pledge for ordinary Canadians to hold their elected representatives to account, to defend our values that we hold dear,” said Angus. “It’s a plan of resistance supporting a vision of our nation, of what it should be and what it is, that will not be traded away by appeasement.”

The 260-word pledge warns that Canada is under “economic threat” and calls for alliances with “like-minded countries.” It includes commitments to indigenous rights, environmental responsibility, and defending democracy from disinformation and corporate influence.

Angus singled out former U.S. President Donald Trump, tech billionaire Elon Musk, and unnamed Canadians who, he said, “would sell out our birthright to appease the gangster class.”

The pledge urges Canadians to protect national resources, prioritize climate action, and push for global cooperation in areas such as human rights, labour rights, and inclusive democracy.
