Muhammad has topped the charts for the second year running as the most popular name for newborn males in England and Wales.The name has been among the top ten names for baby boys for almost a decade, joining the list in 2016, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), and has seen a 23% rise.The ONS released the list of its top 100 baby names for boys and girls in 2024 on July 31. The same name, but spelt “Mohammed,” came in at 21st place. A third different spelling, “Mohammad,” finished in 53rd spot, meaning the name appears three times in the top 100.Olivia has retained its top spot as the most popular name for girls, ever since it overtook Amelia — the second most popular — back in 2016.Rounding out the top five for the boys were Noah, Oliver, Arthur, Leo, and George.As for the girls, the top five after Olivia, were: Amelia, Lily, Isla, and Ivy.ONS data shows there were 594,540 live births in England and Wales in 2024, with 304,899 males and 289,651 females..Alberta's top baby names remain unchanged for sixth consecutive year.“These statistics are based on the exact spelling of the first name on the birth certificate," the ONS said.
