Earlier this week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hinted the federal government would be moving ahead on new gun-control measures "in the coming weeks." Tabling those new gun laws in Canada will begin on Monday by the Liberals..On the May 30 Notice Paper for the House of Commons, Minister of Public Safety Marco Mendicino listed a Bill entitled: “An Act to amend certain Acts and to make certain consequential amendments (firearms).".The Liberals will unveil the new bill when parliament returns for its last four-week stretch before being closed for the summer holidays..It's unclear what new rules gun owners could face in Canada as the Liberals have been tight-lipped about the contents of the bill in advance per parliamentary convention. Canadian gun owners will have to wait to see what the Liberals have proposed..The coming legislation does have the same title as a previously failed Bill C-21 from the last parliament. The bill died on the order paper after Trudeau called the 2021 election..The failed Bill C-21 included amendments to the Criminal Code such as:.Increasing, from 10 to 14 years, the maximum penalty of imprisonment for indictable weapons offensesCreating a new offence for altering a cartridge magazine to exceed its lawful capacityAuthorize employees of certain federal entities who are responsible for security to be considered as public officers.Provide funding to provinces and territories that move ahead with banning handguns in their municipalities. The failed bill also amended the Firearms Act with such changes as:.Impose requirements with respect to the importation of ammunitionRequire the holders of a licence authorizing the possession of a handgun comply with the requirements and prohibitions relating to the storage and transporting of handguns within a municipality in which a bylaw establishing those requirements and prohibitions is in force if the minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness is notified of the by-law in the prescribed manner, and provide for exceptions to that requirement.Require that the Commissioner of Firearms maintain a publicly available list of the municipalities in which such requirements and prohibitions apply.Authorize a chief firearms officer to suspend a licence if they have reasonable grounds to suspect that the licence holder is no longer eligible for it..However, the new legislation may be based on the failed bill from the previous parliament and may include a new "red flag laws" that would allow firearms to be immediately removed if the owner is deemed a threat to themselves or others..The Liberals hinted the new law will also increase the maximum penalties for firearm trafficking and smuggling. The government will also move to ban the sale or transfer of high-capacity magazines that can hold more than the legal number of bullets. .The new gun-control bill is being presented in parliament on Monday and is unlikely to pass before the fall. The Western Standard will bring you more information when bill is tabled.
