A new committee chaired by retired General Rick Hillier has been appointed to oversee the General Hillier Valour and Service Veterans and Military Families Scholarship, a national initiative aimed at supporting Canadian Armed Forces members, veterans, and their families in pursuing post-secondary education.

The scholarship, first announced in February, was launched with a $1-million contribution from MaKami College’s founders.

Hillier, former Chief of the Defence Staff, said the scholarship recognizes the sacrifices of both service members and their families.

“The sacrifice made by members and veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces in service to Canada is one that can never be fully repaid — and neither can the sacrifice made by their families,” Hillier said.

“It is a privilege to help shape a scholarship that honours their contributions, opens doors, creates opportunities for growth, and gives them the tools they need to succeed in the career of their choice — whether they are transitioning to a new career or pursuing studies after supporting a loved one’s service to our country.”

The committee includes military veterans and community leaders who will design and oversee the selection process to ensure that the scholarship is awarded with fairness and integrity.

Alongside Hillier, members include Erika Barootes of MaKami College, retired Brigadier-General Bill Fletcher, Canada Company council member Harwinder Kang, retired Lieutenant Colonel Eleanor Taylor, and retired Master Corporal Giselle Drew Walsh.

The scholarship is open to currently serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces, veterans, and their families. It is being administered in partnership with the MaKami College Education Foundation.

Marija Pavkovic-Tovissi, President of MaKami College, said the idea for the scholarship was rooted in respect for the sacrifices made by military families.

“That’s why our family is proud to be the first to contribute to this meaningful program,” she said.

“I’m especially grateful to the committee, whose experience, past service, and commitment to creating opportunities for our veterans will help ensure this scholarship makes a real impact on the lives of those who served our country and their families.”

The scholarship reflects MaKami’s broader mission to create accessible, life-changing educational opportunities. For more information, visit makamicollege.com/student-awards.
