York Region police called out Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for implementing a handgun freeze, saying it will not reduce crime. .“Out of 107 firearms, 83 of them were successfully traced,” said York Region police Insp. Ahmad Salhia in a press release. .“Of those 83 guns that were traced, 100% of them were identified as illicit firearms coming in from the United States and into Canada.” .The release said Bill C-21 and Trudeau’s handgun freeze are virtue signalling to pander to uninformed urban voters. .The Canadian government's handgun freeze took effect October 21, barring people from buying, selling, transferring, or importing the firearms..READ MORE: UPDATED: National handgun freeze takes effect.People can own and use registered handguns and sell or transfer them to exempted people and businesses. .“Today, we’re keeping more guns out of our communities, and keeping our kids safe,” said Trudeau. .Former police officer Leo Knight called more regulations on legal firearms “profoundly stupid.” .“It is done by incompetent governments faced with a problem who want to be seen to be doing something but aren’t smart enough to actually figure out what to do,” said Knight. .The release said Knight almost nailed it. It said the Canadian government is completely incompetent, and its approach shows profound stupidity. .The release went on to say the issue is not a lack of intelligence or an inability to comprehend facts, but of placing partisan political objectives ahead of public safety. It added pandering for votes is what drives Trudeau and every policy initiative he puts forward. .“Tackling criminal activity requires strong measures against criminals who threaten vulnerable communities, especially criminal activity that funds and powers gangs and organized crime,” said National Police Federation President Brian Sauve. .If Trudeau wanted to enhance public safety, the release said he would focus on keeping young people from entering gang life and plugging openings in Canada’s border security. York Region police identified Walpole Island, ON, as a possible point of entry for the illegal weapons. .“At its nearest point, there’s an 800-metre gap, and as you can see, it’s very easy for organized crime and other criminals to import illicit contraband into the country,” said Salhia..Canadian Shooting Sports Association Executive Director Tony Bernardo said his organization has told the Canadian government for years law-abiding gun owners are not the problem and have never been. ."Over the years, virtually every statistic bears this out, yet the Liberals continue to attack our community relentlessly," said Bernardo. ."As law-abiding as our community is, we really fail to understand why our members are constantly on the Liberals' attack radar."
