By JONATHAN BRADLEY.Canadian personal injury law firm Diamond and Diamond has filed a $500 million class-action lawsuit against Pornhub parent company MindGeek. .“It is astonishing how little safeguards Pornhub had against harm,” said Diamond and Diamond head of commercial and civil litigation, Darryl Singer, in a Thursday press release. “We’re talking about a business built on under-age, non-consensual and pirated content.”.The lawsuit is being led by Ontario resident Christine Wing, who alleges Pornhub failed to screen sexual content uploaded to it. Wing alleges that without her knowledge or consent, three intimate videos of her were uploaded to the website. .“What does one have when you’ve lost your privacy in the worst way?” said Wing. “This is a violation of the most egregious kind.”.Wing is one of thousands of Canadians who might have been subjected to sexual exploitation shown on this website, said Singer. .He said this lawsuit involves any and all people who appeared in sexual videos uploaded to Pornhub. These videos, said the press release, may include videos showing children and adults being sexually abused. .Diamond and Diamond’s lawsuit follows others filed against Pornhub around the world. .One of these lawsuits is a $600-million action led by Ontario plaintiff Jane Doe. Doe alleges her sexual abuse as a child was posted to the website and that she was alerted to it by a high school friend. .MPs on the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy, and Ethics said in 2021 that they were upset federal ministers and the RCMP were not investigating Pornhub for alleged online sexual exploitation. .MPs on the committee brought forward instances where exploitative videos of children and women were not removed from the website, even after victims requested it be done. .A group of 70 MPs and senators across party lines joined 104 survivors and 525 non-government organizations to call for a full investigation. MPs on the committee said they hoped for a progress report, but it was not brought forward. .Pornhub could not be reached for comment in time for publication. .Jonathan Bradley is a Western Standard contributor based in Toronto.
