A new Abacus poll indicated support for the Conservatives has reached a 14-year high, with no improvement in Liberal numbers since the prime minister announced his intent to resign.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday said he no longer believes he’s equipped to lead the country — and then prorogued Parliament until March 24. He will remain prime minister until a new Liberal leader is selected in a leadership race, or cabinet appoints an interim leader.
The Conservatives now have 47% support, with 20% for the Liberals and 18% for the NDP.
Trudeau’s resignation has done nothing to boost Canadians’ confidence in the Liberal party — their numbers are consistent with polling outcomes following former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s December 16 resignation.
The NDP numbers have also remained the same.
The survey was conducted the evening of Trudeau’s resignation announcement, January 6, to January 7. The pollster surveyed 2,500 voting-aged Canadians.
The Conservatives’ 27-point lead over the Liberals is the most substantial margin since Abacus was founded in 2010. If an election were to be held tomorrow, the polling results suggest 47% of Canadians would vote for Pierre Poilievre’s Tories.
