The Quebec Workers Pathway to Permanent Residents program (PEQ) has been halted as of Friday until November 30, as the province looks to slash immigration numbers. Quebec's Immigration Minister, Jean-François Roberge, announced it will be attempting to reduce immigration in the province, with the lowest target set at 25,000 new residents. It will study the effects of three sets of each set of resident numbers, which also include 35,0000 new immigrants or a maximum of 45,000. .They are currently expecting an estimated 64,000 to enter the province. On top of this announcement, Quebec wants the federal government to reduce the amount of temporary immigrants being brought into the province, since these programs are organized by the federal government. Those programs represent approximately 400,000 immigrants and Quebec wants it slashed in half.Roberge said the cut is because of the housing crisis, rising unemployment, the healthcare system, and the capacity for government-funded services for the province.
