Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a man who was seen violently abusing a small brown dog in Nanaimo last Wednesday.
At 11:51 a.m., a witness in the 6500 block of Aulds Rd. reported seeing a man pick up the dog and throw it “like a football” across the road before placing it in a black shopping bag and punching it repeatedly.
When the witness confronted him, he made threats, prompting her to step away and call 911 and Animal Control.
Officers arrived within minutes but were unable to locate the man or the dog.
The suspect is described as a thin white man wearing a black puffy jacket with a wide gray fur-rimmed hood, jeans, and brown boots.
The dog is a small brown breed that may resemble a Chihuahua.
Const. Wade of the Nanaimo RCMP urged the public not to approach the suspect but to report any sightings.
“We want to find the dog but don’t want anyone getting hurt,” Wade said, adding that investigators are following up on all leads.
A person of interest identified through social media has been ruled out as a suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at (250) 754-2345, referencing file 25-4134.
