The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office after an officer was shot and injured while making an arrest near the town of Midway, 70km east of Osoyoos. While it won't be known for sure until the investigation is completed, authorities believe the shot was fired by a fellow mountie.According to the RCMP, officers in Kelowna identified a "suspicious" Ford F-350 around 10:30 a.m. on November 26 and began monitoring it as it travelled along Highway 33 towards Carmi. The truck eventually turned and headed up a forest service road near Midway, at which point plainclothes officers from Penticton and the Kelowna General Investigation Unit, as well as the SED Police Dog Services showed up.Around 1:30 p.m., the law enforcement team managed to pull the truck over and arrest the two occupants. During the struggle, one suspect was bitten by the dog and sustained minor injuries, and one officer was shot. They were quickly transported to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries and have since been released."Preliminary information at this time has led the RCMP to believe that the gun shot wound to the RCMP member was due to police officer fire," the force noted, adding that as such, it will also be the subject of a workplace incident investigation. The IIO will now investigate the actions of the police, however until their work is done, no further information will be released.
