Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's popularity is increasing in the wake of recent and ongoing tariff threats from the U.S. — NDP popularity is dropping, according to a new Leger poll.
Smith and Alberta NDP leader Naheed Nenshi disagree on myriad issues — from pensions, to coal mining, to diplomacy.
Smith's approval rating has increased seven points to 46% since August 2024, while Nenshi's approval has dropped from 39% to 37%.
The United Conservative Party led by Smith is significantly ahead in voting intention, with 51% support compared to 36% for the NDP under Nenshi.
Despite her rising approval, Smith's handling of the tariff crisis with the U.S. only garnered 35% approval.
She was heralded as a hero to some and traitor to others for chartering her own course in terms of negotiating with U.S. President Donald Trump and other American officials.
"Alberta will do everything in its power to convince the U.S. president and Congress, as well as the American people, to reverse this mutually destructive policy," said Smith during the tariff crisis — which still isn't resolved.
According to Leger, there is a perception of Nenshi being less visible in addressing key issues like the tariff crisis, with some criticism labeling Smith's approach as attention-seeking but also acknowledging her increased profile in media coverage.
"Premier Smith is obsessed with being the centre of attention, talking about what she’s doing but not actually doing the work," said Nenshi recently.
"Danielle Smith’s Washington D.C. selfie tour and balls-and-parties charm offensive has failed every Albertan and every Canadian."
