Texters beware – there’s a new scam out there.
A text has started circulating with a notification the person has received a national relief cheque of $65 for receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.
The text also includes a live link to Health Canada to click on and claim your cash. But of course, you know what they say when something is too good to be true.
When the Western Standard clicked on it a security warning was received saying there was a “deceptive site ahead.
“Attackers on bit.ly may trick you into doing something dangerous like installing software or revealing your personal information (for example, passwords, phone numbers, or credit cards).”
Fraudulent or suspicious activity can be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, through its website at www.antifraudcentre.ca, or by telephone at 1-888-495-8501.
Report instances of misleading or deceptive marketing practices to the Competition Bureau using the online complaint form or by telephone at 1-800-348-5358. If you are a victim of fraud, let your local police force know.
