An avalanche near Golden, British Columbia has left one man dead.

The unidentified victim was swept down the face of Kapritso Mountain on Monday while on a ski trip with his mate.

According to Avalanche Canada, "the first skier in a group of two triggered a wind slab avalanche near the top of the slope." It was 30m wide, with an average depth of 20cm and a maximum depth of 40cm.

"The avalanche funnelled into a confined gulley and ran 990 m in length," the report added. "The subject was located near the toe of the avalanche and was 120 cm below the surface."

Avalanches are measured on a scale of one to five; the higher the number, the more destructive. This one came in at Size 2.

Per the CBC, the skiers were first reported missing around 10 p.m. Monday, four-and-a-half hours after they were last heard from.

The deceased man's remains were recovered via helicopter, and will be given to the BC Coroners Service.

This is not the first time skiers have been killed by avalanches near Golden. In February 2023, two people were buried while out with a group in an area known as Terminator 2.5.
