Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said there is an email from the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) going around about her plans to take over the Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP). .“This is not true,” said Smith in a letter to LAPP members. .“LAPP’s assets belong to LAPP members, not to the government, and the provincial government cannot take them to fund a different pension plan anymore than the federal government could take them to fund the Canada Pension Plan.” .Under the Alberta United Conservative Party, the letter said LAPP members will continue to receive the full amount of their pension from this fund, and it will continue to administer it as it does today. .Smith accused CUPE of “misleading its members to scare them into voting for the NDP.” She said members “deserve better from their union leadership.” .“A UCP government will not be making any changes to LAPP, period,” she said. .CUPE could not be reached for comment in time for publication.
