A hit and run in Surrey has left a six-year-old girl dead and her two siblings in hospital with numerous injuries.

The suspect's grey pick-up truck was quickly tracked down and the driver taken into custody.

According to the Surrey Police Service, the incident took place shortly after 4 p.m. on Sunday while the trio were out for a walk with their parents at the intersection of 164 St. and 108 Ave. It has not been determined whether they were making their way across the street or simply waiting at the crosswalk.

When Surrey Fire Service firefighters and BC Emergency Health Services paramedics arrived on scene, they immediately got to work trying to save the victims.

Despite first responders' best efforts, the six-year-old girl died at the scene in front of her parents. Her seven-year-old sister sustained injuries to her upper body, while her 16-year-old brother sustained injuries to his leg and torso. They were transported to a nearby hospital, where doctors determined neither of their injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

After hitting the victims with their pickup truck, the driver fled the scene. They didn't make it very far, however, as police arrested them in the area of 101 Ave. and 160 St. Upon being detained, they were taken into custody, where they remain as the investigation unfolds.

The investigation is being led by the RCMP Surrey Police Operations Support Unit’s Criminal Collision Investigation Team with assistance from the Lower Mainland District Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service.

It is not currently known what caused the collision, however authorities have not ruled out alcohol as a potential contributing factor.

Anyone with information has been asked to call the Surrey Police Service at 604-599-0502.
