The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) requested Ontario Premier Doug Ford reject Toronto Mayor John Tory’s plan to enact road tolls on the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway. .“Tory’s proposal is completely out of touch with the challenges facing Torontonians,” said CTF Ontario Director Jay Goldberg in a Thursday press release. .“Families are dealing with food bills that are $1,000 higher this year than last year.”.Goldberg said Torontonians don't need Tory “to pummel them with higher taxes.” .The Ontario government would have to approve any proposal from Toronto City Council to impose highway tolls. Ford scrapped tolls on Highway 412 and 418. .Tory proposed imposing road tolls in 2016, requesting drivers pay a $2 fee for using the Don Valley Parkway and Gardiner Expressway. .Former Ontario premier Kathleen Wynne rejected his request in 2017. .He condemned Wynne for not imposing tolls, calling the move “short-sighted” and “not right.” .“With rampant inflation and soaring gas prices, the last thing Toronto taxpayers need is to have to pay tolls just to get to work or to get their kids to school,” said Goldberg.
