Conservative MP Larry Brock (Brantford—Brant) has called on Marc Miller — the Liberal chair of the Commons justice committee — to meet and discuss the crime wave in Canada. In a letter addressed to Miller, Brock says since 2015 crime in Canada has "has increased by nearly 55%." He also cites violent crimes "have skyrocketed. Sexual assaults are up 76%, firearms offences are up 131%, and extortion cases have surged by over 330%."Brock also notes the Toronto Police Association, Ontario Provincial Police Association, and Calgary Police Service have all "called for urgent bail reform to stop the cycle of repeat violent offenders being released back onto the streets." .He states even the BC and Manitoba government, and the Attorney General of British Columbia have all expressed their wish for bail changes."This is a national outcry cutting across provinces, political affiliations, and law enforcement jurisdictions urging the federal government to stop the revolving door of justice and restore public safety," wrote Brock.Brock said he wishes to hear from victims, law enforcement, and experts who are affected by the "soft-on-crime laws fueling this violence."He has enacted Standing Order 106 (8) which requires producing a written request and sending it to "the clerk of the committee. The chair is then required to call a meeting of the committee to consider the written request within five calendar days of receipt of the request, having given at least 48 hours’ prior notice of the meeting.".The written request addressed to Miller was also signed by three members of the committee, which Brock received from himself, Tory MPs Roman Barber, Andrew Lawton, and Amarjeet Gill. On the Conservative Party's website, an article entitled "Carney’s Crime Wave Continues", highlights how Bill C-381, which was meant to give extortionists with a higher penalty, was voted against by the Liberals.
