The UCP is looking at building a toll bridge in northern Alberta if residents want it..“In July, leaders from Mackenzie County & La Crete Chamber of Commerce requested AB’s govt explore the building a toll bridge at Tompkins Crossing on Hwy 697 to replace the La Crete ferry,” tweeted provincial Transportation Minister Ric McIver..“AB was not planning to build a bridge at this location in the next several decades if at all..“Today I responded by agreeing to explore their request for a user-fee funded bridge to replace the ferry. We are still reeling from the economic double whammy of the #COVID19AB pandemic & OPEC+ oil crisis, and Alberta will soon face a fiscal reckoning..“AB’s govt promised to look at creative ways to build new infrastructure that Albertans & job creators need If AB accepted the suggestion of local leaders & built a bridge financed by collection of user fees, we’d be able to start construction on a replacement bridge next year.“However, let me be clear, we will not compromise on 2 key principles: 1. Albertans must always have a free route to take 2. AB’s govt will not implement tolls on existing infrastructure (toll must be used to finance infra that would not otherwise get built/to build it faster)”.Andrew Friesen, President of the La Crete and Area Chamber of Commerce, said the crossing of the Peace River at Tomkins is “essential” for the areas business corridor. It is only open in the summer.. Defying crackdown, hundreds march against lockdowns in Calgary .McIver said he will visit the area next week to discuss the situation..But the NDP said this approach could set a dangerous precedent for future projects across the province..“This pressure tactic sends the message to municipalities that their project will go to the back of the UCP’s list unless they’re willing to impose tolls on their residents,” said Transportation Critic Rod Loyola..“This forces economically struggling communities into an impossible choice – do without critical transportation or let Jason Kenney pick the pockets of their families and small businesses even more.”.The NDP said the bridge would cost $200 million. It would be the only toll bridge in the province..Dave Naylor is the News Editor of the Western Standard.dnaylor@westernstandardonline.com.TWITTER: Twitter.com/nobby7694
