A 16-year-old unlicensed driver had his parents’ minivan towed and was hit with $955 in tickets after police clocked him going 160 km/h with teenage passengers lying next to yard tools and a lawnmower.BC Highway Patrol said the incident happened around 4:30 a.m. on June 4 along Hwy. 97, south of Pelmewash Parkway. The minivan sped up behind a marked police cruiser, triggering radar that captured the excessive speed in a 100 km/h zone. The teen had no driver’s licence, and two of his passengers were sprawled on the floor in the back of the van where there were no seats or seatbelts..“This had all the ingredients of an imminent tragedy,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin of BC Highway Patrol. “Parents, make sure you talk to your kids. Teach them well to help them have a safe summer on BC highways.”The teenager was issued violation tickets for excessive speed, driving without a licence, and operating a vehicle with too many passengers. The minivan was impounded for seven days. The teen’s parents told officers he did not have permission to drive the van. One passenger’s parents said they thought their son was home asleep.
