A crowd of angry fishermen gathered in St John’s, NFLD, to protest Liberal leader Mark Carney’s election campaign, which kicked off in Canada’s most eastern province Sunday night.
The Trudeau-Carney Liberals put limits on the harvesting of snow crab off the coast of Newfoundland (the 3K area) and imposed broader management of the sector.
The new rules instituted by local MP and federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson has resulted in snow crab harvesting in the 3K division to lose nearly 25% of last year's total allowable catch at 7,643 tons, down from 9,998 tons in 2024, according to a report from the CBC.
About 100 fish harvesters, many representing the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW), turned up to Carney’s event to protest at the Convention Centre in St. Joh’s.
Carney in his speech said he was “there to listen” to the fishermen’s grievances, and said his government will have another look at the fisheries department.
By the end of the event, police had the entire building blocked off and were guiding people off the premises through a side entrance.
FFAW representatives confirmed they met with Thompson over the Liberals’ restrictive policies and they are not happy about it, reported the CBC.
FFAW In-shore president Jason Sullivan at a rally on Sunday said the Liberals are destroying rural Newfoundland.
"No one gives a f*** about Newfoundland," said Sullivan.
"When you find carbon tax Carney this evening, you've got to show him you're not weak."
