Liberal leader Mark Carney’s Tuesday night rally in Calgary was interrupted twice by pro-Palestine activists, and an entire group of them were waiting outside at the end of the event.

More than two thousand people turned out for the event, at a venue with a capacity of 900, but many more people were outside listening to the rally on loudspeakers.

The Liberal party’s official estimate is 2,300, including people inside and out. The Western Standard talked to several people outside and inside the venue — though still more refused to talk to independent media.

One young woman was there to support the Liberals because her father is involved in politics and she agrees with the platform, and another supporter said she’s been volunteering at local and federal political campaigns for 19 years.

One man walking away from the venue before the doors opened told the Western Standard he had driven to Calgary from Sylvan Lake to “hear what this politician has to say.” However, he was turned away at the door because he didn’t realize he needed to register in advance.

He said he had also been to Tory leader Pierre Poilievre’s rally in Edmonton the night before, which had a record-breaking turnout of 15,000 people — and at the Conservatives’ rally, there was “no registration, no ID needed and no QR code.”

All of the above were required for people who wanted to attend the Carney rally.

Diana Fox Carney introduced her husband, joking about his early days as a hockey goalie — and how she’s never been able to put one past him.

The crowd cheered his name as he appeared onstage, and said, “Wow, I thought we were in Calgary!”

Alberta, generally a Conservative-leaning province, is a notoriously tougher crowd for Liberals.

“What a treat,” he said.

“Mr. Carney, there’s a genocide happening in Palestine!” shouted a heckler about 15 seconds into the Liberal leader’s speech.

“I know there is,” replied Carney, as the crowd began spontaneously chanting his name. The heckler was removed from the room, but he could be heard shouting about Palestine on the way out.

He continued with his speech, and about 30 seconds later another heckler yelled, “Mr. Carney why are you buying fighter jets from the USA?!”

“We are reviewing the contract,” replied Carney.

The crowd began chanting his name again, as the second heckler was promptly escorted out.

Carney at the end of his rally said he met some 10-year-olds the other day who “dreamed about the day” when President Donald Trump wouldn’t impose tariffs on Canada.
