During Question Period on Tuesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney claimed that the Liberals could grow the economy "without spending money."Just days earlier, the party tabled a $486 billion spending plan — known as the Main Estimates — which showed few noticeable changes from the previous administration.."Unlike the member opposite, I know the difference between a main estimate and a budget," Carney said in response to grilling from Conservative MP Kelly McCauley, "and unlike the members opposite, we know how to grow this economy without spending money."The prime minister's claim was met with audible laughter from the other side of the chamber.."The Liberals want a blank cheque," Conservative MP Joël Godin replied, "and they want approval to spend over $1.5 billion without us knowing what the financial situation really is. During the election campaign, they promised to limit spending to 2%, but instead, they're increasing it by 8%. This government has already shown that they deceived Canadians; will the minority Liberals listen to the majority in parliament and table a budget this spring?"He went on to note that, "if our families, seniors, and SMEs acted like this government, they'd be bankrupt."Carney did not say whether a budget would be tabled in the next 18 days, only saying his priority was growing the economy by turning 13 Canadian economies into one..Earlier, Carney declared that, "what Canadian provinces deserve is a healthcare transfer, a transfer for childcare, a transfer for dental care," and that such things were already in the Main Estimates.."I realize he's new here," McCauley shot back, "but all of those things would be in a budget — if he'd table one!"He went on to slam Carney's party over plans to spend "a staggering $26 billion on high-price, Liberal-friendly consultants" this year alone. The Conservatives were quick to criticize the Main Estimates when the document was tabled on May 29."Just like Justin Trudeau, Mark Carney's spending is absolutely out of control," Pierre Poilievre said. "In fact, it's worse."
